Our Program

The Acera STEAM Learning Lab is an educational enrichment and community outreach program powered by Acera, the Massachusetts School of Science, Creativity and Leadership. At our beautiful, well-equipped facility in Winchester, we offer a unique variety of creativity-based afternoon, vacation and summer programs for children ages 7 to 15. We also offer weekend classes for both parents and children.

Our Approach

At Acera, we believe that deep exploration of STEAM subjects should begin early. Our hands-on learning environment allows elementary and middle school children to nurture their natural desire to inquire, create, and innovate; and experiment with content and concepts usually reserved for older students–or not introduced during K-12 school years at all.

With emphases on critical thought, creative problem solving, and integration of content areas, our programs inspire all types of learners and thinkers. Students discover engineering, biotechnology, math, arts, theater, design, electronics, music, chemistry, physics, teamwork, friendships — and who they are: as individuals, learners, and collaborators.

Join Us

STEAM Learning Lab programs are open to Acera and non-Acera students. Classes are taught by specialist educators with advanced degrees and experience in academia, the biotech, engineering, design, arts and music industries. (Click here for more on our faculty.)

Some of the unique offerings you’ll find #onlyatacera include:

  • Designing and running your own experiments in a professionally equipped science lab.
  • Blending creativity, coding, engineering, and robotics to design interactive murals, drawing robots, programmable projections, solar-powered jewelry and electronic textiles.
  • Drafting, engineering and building your own wooden games, furniture, playground equipment (such as a tree house) and more in our woodshop and MakerSpace.
  • Sharpening your diplomacy and leadership skills in our Debate Club and our Model UN program for Middle School students.

An overview of STEAM Learning Lab afternoon programs is here. You can also browse offerings per weekday via the home page (or get started here: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays)

What to Expect

Our STEAM Learning Lab is designed to challenge students of all ages and learning styles. Participants should expect to tackle difficult, enticing problems, individually and in groups. They should anticipate taking the time to incorporate new techniques as they create unique works of art or design experimental protocols or novel engineering solutions.
